Earlier this year, an Ohio woman filed a lawsuit against Zantac, stating that her consistent use of the popular heartburn medicine over twelve years resulted in her kidney cancer diagnosis.
Kidney cancer is the sixth most common cancer in men and the eighth-most common for women. Zantac may prevent healthy cells from growing in the kidneys, which then leaves room for cancerous tumors to form. Your kidneys are responsible for getting waste out of your body and producing hormones that regulate blood pressure. They are also vital in making red blood cells. Heartburn medications containing ranitidine like Zantac may contain high levels of NDMA and can lead to kidney issues and even kidney cancer.
Kidney cancer is treatable if caught early enough, and treatment options vary depending on how advanced the cancer is. The Ohio plaintiff underwent surgery to remove the cancer (and surrounding healthy tissue) from her kidneys to prevent the spread and hopefully rid her body of the cancer. Her lawsuit joins many others from across the country who have been diagnosed with kidney cancer after taking Zantac.
The plaintiff’s complaint states that the drug makers failed to report the link between Zantac, NDMA, and cancer. According to her statement, by not reporting these risks to the FDA, the drug companies put many people at risk and allowed people to take medication over a long period of time that was known to increase the risks of cancer.
If you’ve taken Zantac over a long period of time and are showing a combination of any of these symptoms, you must schedule an appointment with your doctor right away:
Blood in urine
Low back pain
Extreme fatigue
Loss of appetite
A mass on the lower back
If you trusted the FDA and the drug companies to offer a safe heartburn relief medicine and instead ended up with serious health conditions like kidney failure or cancer, you deserve justice.
